Heritage Night - February 27th: Sign-up Now!
Hello everyone! The PTA is working alongside BCS parent, Dawn Isaacs, to kick off the inaugural Heritage Night. Heritage Night will be an opportunity to celebrate our community by sharing families' individual cultures and heritage, however that is meaningful to them. We all have a story to share! Families/students may set up a "booth" with information about their family, display special artifacts, foods, music, etc. and/or sign up to do a demonstration of song/music or dance. There is no right or wrong way to participate! Here are some ideas:
*Displaying a poster with information/pictures
*Teaching a song or dance
*Sharing a special food
*Creating a craft or sharing a piece of art
If you and your child would like to participate, please consider signing up--what a great way to build community and connect with one another. We all have a story to share!
Heritage Night will be held on February 27, 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the BCS Cafetorium. Families/students sign-up now. Please contact Marie Westom (president@beverlyclearyschool.org) or Dawn Isaacs dawnmarieisaacs@gmail.com if you have any questions.
ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITIES
PPS Advocacy Night, February 19th, 6 - 7 PM, Virtual/Zoom
The PPS Community is invited to attend an Advocacy Night virtual training, State Budget Advocacy 101, to access valuable tools to advocate for increased funding from the state. This will be a virtual meeting and you can join from pps.net or at the following Zoom Link. Find more information on our new Advocacy webpage hosted on fundforpps.org. We will be updating this page frequently over the next few months. Please check it for updates and other opportunities.
Oregon PTA Advocacy: School Meals for All
Submit testimony to support funding for "School Meals for All" by February 24. No student in Oregon should go hungry at school, no matter where they live, or how much money their family makes.
School Meals for All will ensure that free breakfast and lunches are offered to any student, regardless of their ability to pay. Students can’t learn when they’re hungry, or when they’re worried about where their next meal might come from. School meals enable students to grow and learn, and provide far-reaching benefits beyond the school day.
We all want to see our children flourish – food is essential to children’s health and learning. Every child deserves an equal opportunity to succeed in school, yet 1 in 6 children in Oregon doesn’t have enough food to eat. The rate is 2-3x higher for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous children.
There are many reasons that a kid can go hungry at school – lost paperwork, stigma, forgotten lunch. We don’t know what is going on in individual homes, and children going hungry at school should never be the result. Please support "School Meals for All" by submitting testimony before Monday, February 24.
Oregon PTA: Advocacy Connection
Oregon PTA is hosting a bi-weekly Zoom meeting space for parents to informally connect and coordinate advocacy efforts. We discuss what is happening in the legislature, share upcoming advocacy opportunities, and most importantly support each other.
It is open to everyone (PTA-member or not, registration required) on every other Wednesday from 12:30-1:30pm. The next dates are Feb 19, March 5, March 19. Issues discussed align with Oregon PTA's legislative platform.
