Newsletter Special Edition: Join the Board
4/3/2024 11:31 am
Hi BCS Community,
It’s hard to believe it’s already time to recruit the board positions for the next school year, but here we are! As the membership chair, I’d like to share a few things with the full community, and request that you all consider if you might be willing to serve in a board position next year. We need your perspectives, and as I’ve been saying with my cheesy lime green shirt this year… there is NO wrong way to PTA.
What does the BCS PTA do?
BCS’ PTA supports critical academic needs, is an active voice in decisions that impact your child’s health, safety, and quality of education, and builds a stronger, more inclusive school community. The BCS PTA:
- Hosts community building events like Spookarama and the Art Show
- Supports educational enrichment activities like OBOB and Neurodiveristy week
- Celebrates and supports our teachers through teacher appreciation week and grants
- And so much more!
What do you need to do as a board member?
- Join the PTA for the 2024-2025 school year ($25 Dues)
- Attend monthly meetings in person or virtually to provide your input on PTA topics, and work with your leads to facilitate the events under your purview
- Additional responsibilities are unique to each board or lead position (linked below).
Do you have to do everything that’s covered in your position description?
Nope. That’s the great thing about a volunteer position - you do what you can. If we can’t recruit leads, something may not happen.
Isn’t the board only for stay-at-home parents?
Nope. In fact, all of our board members this year have other commitments, ranging from demanding corporate jobs to multiple board and community service responsibilities and leadership positions, to their own academic schooling, and other consulting and employment positions.
Can I lead something and not join the board?
Absolutely. We have more than 30 key lead positions available (see our survey for the full list).
Want to learn more?
You have options!
- Check out the job descriptions on our website HERE.
- Fill out this form, and our nominating committee will reach out: https://forms.gle/93SaBmLHk9Nacy1x5
- Send me an email and I’d be happy to meet up and talk about my own experience. This is my second year on the board.
- Talk with our wonderful nominating committee:
Bridget Schum (bridgetmschum@gmail.com),
Margi Bradway (margibradway@gmail.com), or
Ashleigh Hatchel (ash.hatchel@gmail.com).
On a personal note, we moved to this community from Seattle in April of 2021, and I joined the board in the fall of 2022. I’ve loved getting to know parents of kids in other cohorts I wouldn’t otherwise meet, learning from other parents, and seeing how passionate this community is about our kiddos and our school. I hope you’ll consider taking a chance on saying “yes,” too - I’m so glad I did.
Finally, I want to share the names and faces of the people on our board this year - if you see them and want to talk - just ask! (Not pictured are Ms. Presley, our Principal, along with Ms. Lee and Ms. Kobs, our teacher PTA representatives!)
